The Forex UK session is one of the biggest in the foreign exchange market on a daily basis. London is one of the major foreign currency exchange locations in the world along with New York, Tokyo and Sydney. Here are the basics of what you can expect from this particular trading session.
When it Happens
Although Forex trading in general is available 24 hours per day, 5 days per week, the London session is not going on all the time.
The actual session takes place during the business day in London. The
Forex market hours
for the London session take place between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 GMT. If you're situated in the United States, this gives you
Forex trading hours
of 3:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
This means that the last three hours of the session overlap with the New York trading session. During this time, there is a lower volume in the market and you should expect some big movement on many days.
If you're situated in the United States, this is not the most convenient time to trade. Unless of course, you're a night owl or you're already planning on being up to watch the juicer and buying foreclosure infomercials that are on at that time.
Many of the commercial trading systems that are out there are based on trading in the beginning of the London session. This is great if you're situated in the UK or somewhere else, but in the United States, it means that you're either going to have a very late night or an early morning.
What to Expect
If you plan on trading during the session, you should have an idea of what to expect. Typically, there is a large amount of volume on any of the pairs that include the Great Britain Pound. This is obvious because the majority of traders in the session are from the UK area.
Towards the end of the session, when it overlaps with the US session, the GBP/USD pair is very popular. During that time, you could see it move a large amount. If you like trading this pair, this could be the best time to trade it on any given day.
In the United Kingdom, they have many good Forex brokers that you could open accounts with. For example, Alpari UK is a popular one situated in this area. Forex.com UK is another one that we could recommend if you're in this area.
If you live in the UK, you should also consider taking advantage of brokers that allow spread betting. This basically allows you to do the same thing that you would do when Forex trading except you are not actually trading the currencies. The big advantage of using this type of trading is that you do not have to worry about any taxes on profits.
Like the other trading sessions in the market, you should get a feel for how the Forex UK session moves before betting big. Try it out with a demo first and see exactly how it moves first. This can help you keep your hard earned money until you get a basic understanding for how it works.
